Ill Manors broadcast platform: trailer analysis

What are the typical codes and conventions of film trailers - what information is usually provided?

The typical codes and conventions of film trailers are: The release date, Title, Todorov's equilibrium and disequilibrium, the non-diegetic music, the tagline and all of the behind the scene people who had worked on the film even including the actors.

How are trailers distributed

Nowadays, trailers are normally distributed very differently compared to when they were distributed many years ago. Back then, trailers would normally been shown in a cinema before any movie had started. This would allow the audience to see the latest movies that would be coming out and will pay more to the cinemas to watch it. Nowadays, trailers are distributed in many different ways. One of them is that they have been published on different social media websites, e.g. YouTube and even Twitter.
How does the Ill Manors trailer use trailer conventions?

In the movie Ill Manors, the trailer conventions they had used are the following:
  • The release date of the movie
  • The non-diegetic sound in the background when parts of the movie have been shown.
  • The plot of the movie, e.g. Drugs
  • Props, e.g. guns.
  • The main characters of the movie
  • The setting (Ghetto area)
Who is the target audience? Does it have a unique selling point or use particular techniques to appeal to the audience? Consider the way the scenes are edited together – does the trailer give away any clues about the narrative? Are the main stars visible in the trailer? Is there information about the director of the film? Is there information about the release date? Is a narrator’s voice-over used? Why?

In my opinion, the target audience for this movie is people who are aged between 15 and 25 and particularly male over female. This is because it is an action based movie and more younger males who enjoy movies like these maybe due to the fact some of them may live similar lifestyles to the main characters in the movie. This movie, just by looking at the trailer, has given many different types of clues about the movie. One of them being the drugs. This suggests that the setting of the movie will most likely be in a ghetto area because many people in those types of areas would do illegal things and do not care about what they do. Another thing that may tell the audience that this movie is a 'ghetto' movie is that there are many different scenes where a gun has been shown. This could instantly tell the audience that people have been betrayed by others and those people could even be close family or friends. In the middle of the trailer, it shows the  director of the movie in a short cameo scene where is driving a taxi and the audience are able to see his face in the rear view mirror. The release date was shown at the end of the trailer which is as any other typical trailer shown.

How has the genre of the film been represented through characters, settings, lighting, colour, music/dialogue, camera shots/movements/angles and editing

Through the charatcers, there has been shown a lot of anger and violence which obviously states that this is to do with crime and action. Also, the fact that the use a gun and is mostly filmed in a dark and discrete area can suggest that it could also be linked to horror. However, the audience will obviiously know that there isn't no horror because there isn't anything in the trailer that would make anyone jump etc.
