Ill Manors: TEDx lecture

1) Plan B/ Ben Drew has portrayed in his conference in Ted that young people have been given a bad name by the media. A lot of  the media believe that people from dysfunctional backgrounds are ones who causes violence. Ben Drew was also a person who was brought up in a dysfunction family, as he was kicked out of school in year 10 having not finished High School. He has a strong disbelief to different ideologies that are related to young people; Many people believe that young people are very dangerous people and all of them are the SAME. However, Ben Drew doesn't believe that and thinks that not everyone is the same and that everyone has their own way of living. He then started talking about the word 'chav' and how it had one meaning a long time ago and now it has a complete different meaning. People around the world believe chav's are people who live in Estates. However, Plan B believe that what the media are doing is wrong because this then gives people around the world a negative view on these people who live in the Estates due to the fact that they are poor.

2) Personally, the Tedx talk can lead between the ages between 13-30. This is because of the fact that he's talking about youths who live in the council estates which of course involves them too and 13 is around the age where young people would start to acknowledge different things. The demographics  that I believe that are mostly involved are 'working class' (Class E or D) males which leads to stereotypes; Many people believe these particular men can be very dangerous and this is why Ben Drew has talked on Tedx, to tell the audience that these people are not and yet again, what the media is doing is extremely wrong and shouldn't talk negatively them. In addition, the physcographic groups that are involved in the video are either 'Aspirer's' and 'Struggler's'. Aspirers are a group that are seeking status. In other words, they are wanting to make a name for themselves. Linking it back to the video, Aspiriers would be the young 'working class' male that are wanting attention mainly from the government and politicians. The other group, sturgglers, are seeking escape. This links to what Ben Drew is talking about because he talks about these different people that have been criticized and those people didn't want to be in that situation. Therefore, the are wanting to get out of that criticism and make a new start for themselves.

3) Linking the video to the media, Ben Drew believes that the media always talk negatively about young people who live in council estates, especially in the newspaper. This is when he starts to talk about the word 'chav' and how people nowadays believe that this is how to describe all young people. He now believes that the word 'chav' means 'Council House and Violence'. From looking at Cohen's theory of moral panics, it talks about how moral panics back then are where members of society and cultures become morallly sensitized. This can link to young 'black' people in the media as the media occasionally brand young 'black' people as violent people when most of the time it isn't even true; The media just like to blame them and that's when the citizens have bad feeling about them.
